Some thoughts from recent force-on-force firearms training

1) Predator/prey action/reaction timing drills need to be experienced. This jives perfectly with what the late Jim Cirillo taught members of the NYPD Stakeout Unit about challenging armed criminals.

2) It is imperative to "start first" mentally, and be near cover when it starts. The fastest draw in the world may not help you if you're not mentally in the fight soon enough, and a fast sprint to distant cover from a dead start is not always possible nor effective.

3) More economical motion, including a slower, surreptitious draw, may attract less attention in a chaotic active shooter/hostage/armed robbery scenario.

4) Cover, distance (not just in terms of range to target but also opportunity for other things to grab attention in between) and being inconspicuous help you get shot less.

5) True, Airsoft guns don't recoil and guys hit with Airsoft don't stop, but 15 rounds can go awfully quick!

6) When you have to see your target and background clearly yet place good hits at medium (not point blank) range, peripheral and "fuzzy" sight awareness are effective. Focus can go more to sights when you're behind cover, especially when trying to hit someone behind cover at longer range. Ability to use peripheral and fuzzy sight awareness is enhanced by both precision sighted shooting and close quarters intuitive shooting practice.
